BOOK TO FILM ADAPTATIONS ON NETFLIX: 5 TO WATCH THIS VALENTINE’S DAY

Wondering which film to watch on Netflix this Valentine’s Day? There’s nothing worse than when a great book gets ruined by a shoddy film adaptation. However, some of the best films out there came from books originally! We’ve rounded up our favourite book to film adaptations on Netflix in case you’re in need of some Valentine’s Netflix n’ Chill*…

*By that, we definitely mean sit on opposite ends of the sofa and half watch, half scroll with one hand in a bowl of popcorn. Obviously.

PS. I Love You

One of Cecilia Ahern’s greatest books brought to life on screen! Who doesn’t fancy a Valentine’s date with Gerard Butler? The film gives you a good excuse to laugh and cry. It’s heartbreaking and uplifting all at once as Holly navigates a year of letters and challenges from her dead husband.

On Chesil Beach

Based on Ian Mcewan’s novel of the same title, On Chesil Beach isn’t exactly a particularly encouraging love story. However, what it does do very well is explore the young marriage at a time when such a thing was an assumed sign of maturity and the pressure of a ‘wedding night’. It’s a beautiful film based upon a beautiful, if not sad, novella by a brilliant author.

Eat Pray Love

Elizabeth Gilbert’s ‘perfect’ life shatters when she finds herself faced with divorce. She embarks on a journey of self-discovery through solo travel. Gilbert’s novel is ‘One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia’ and the film is the perfect Valentine’s Day watch if you want to steer away from the usual ‘boy meets girl’ and focus on female independence instead!

Dear John

Dear John, based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel follows John and Savannah as he enlists in to the military following 9/11. The two communicate via letters, one of which reveals that she’s fallen in love with somebody else. Over the next few years, fate tests their relationship. It’s classic Sparks’; a sniveler but ultimately an uplifting love story and a great Valentine’s Day watch!

Pride & Prejudice

What better time than to take things old school with the BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. Is it even Valentine’s Day without a spot of Mr Darcy?!
